7 Almost Free Things To See and Do in Berlin

‘Berlin, the greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine.’ — David Bowie.

An apt statement made by the late 70s singer himself who lived in Schöneberg for two years and recorded the biggest hits of his singing career in the late 1970s.

THE popular city in Europe

Berlin is undoubtedly the most popular city to visit when in Europe any time of the year. A hub of history, art, music and graffiti, Berlin attracts millions of tourists annually. What’s exciting about this mixed blend of a cultural mashup, is that there are many ways to immerse yourself in the city. You can go luxury, mid-luxury, affordable, budget and the real college budget. In a nutshell – one city that gives you maximum pleasure regardless of budget.

Although we have to admit, exploration in any city is always sweeter when you walk around, take the local transport; find out what the free tours and sights are, or getting wonderfully lost.

So here’s our round-up of free (and affordable) things to do in Berlin without breaking your wallet.

1. Take a Free Walking Tour

A great free activity for those who want to know more about Berlin’s heritage and its famous buildings. You’ll explore Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and what’s left of the Berlin Wall. Just remember to walk comfortable trainers and book your walking tours early!

2. Visit the DDR Museum

This small museum located at the corner of the infamous Checkpoint Charlie gives you interesting insights into the daily lives of people living in communist East Berlin. Book your tickets directly from DDR Museum website for cheaper rates

3. Go to the Jewish Memorial

Berlin’s past is a hard one to forget, but it’s important to understand history, to ensure it doesn’t happen again. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe was opened in 2015 and is made up of 2,711 concrete columns, of all different sizes, that form a maze-like memorial. Open 24/7 day and night.

4. Free lunch date with the Berlin Philharmonic

Performed by members of the orchestra and music students and last around 40 minutes, this free lunchtime concerts start at 1 pm on Tuesdays in the foyer. Seats are limited so get there early.

5. Have an afternoon bath

Perfect for summer, take a 20-minute train ride south-west of the city to Strandbad Wannsee, a lido with over a kilometre of sandy beach.

6. View from the top

One of the best views across Berlin would be the top of the Reichstag parliament building. Entry is free but booking in advance is required either on either on the Bundestag website or at the office on Scheidemann Strasse.

7. Get the Museums Pass

It lasts three days and gives entry to the permanent collections at 34 museums and exhibitions, including those on Museum Island. Get it here.

So there you have it. Start exploring Berlin!
